Woodcuts

Korea has a long tradition in producing images or signs through a printing process. The first metal movable type printing press was invented in Korea around 1230, more than 200 years before Gutenberg. As far as woodcuts are concerned, the first print from 80,000 wooden blocks that illustrated the complete collection of Buddhist scriptures is dated 1021.

A fundamental aspect for collectors is that, uncharacteristically for this technique, each edition is guaranteed to be of only of five copies so that, according to contemporary art conventions, each copy can be considered a unique.

The works are arranged in alphabetical order by the title. By clicking on a letter of the alphabet in the second row of this window, all works with the title beginning with that letter are shown.
